Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular calls from the official, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
