Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on recent findings.

Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Online

Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Active Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before directing customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Some experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Content Removal

Based on the social media company, the service has taken down problematic content and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Operations

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with numerous of users, filled with photos of weight loss, positive testimonials and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at home.

Within minutes of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored harmful material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
