Sheff Wed Faces Major Issues, States New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

The Championship club's persistent issues are seen as a "serious issue" and the new football authority is aiming to acquire authority to look into club affairs in similar circumstances, its new chair the regulator has declared.

During an extensive discussion, the regulator, who was appointed on Monday, voiced concern towards the club's followers.

Kogan met with four supporters' associations associated with the Championship side recently.

The team have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in 2025, with the club delaying salary disbursements on multiple instances, including in the autumn.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a serious issue for football authorities and a substantial concern for English football," the regulator explained.

"The club represents one of the iconic names for the English game and this week we have met supporters' organizations.

"We are seeking authority... which will allow us to have the club and similar situations submitted for our review if they need to be investigated and addressed."

Economic Challenges and Leadership Concerns

Wednesday's embattled owner the current owner indicated in the summer he would be willing to sell up at their home ground, but he has not been able to secure a deal with potential new owners.

Missed wage deadlines on time in earlier this year caused limitations by the English Football League (EFL) in summer, preventing the club from carrying out any transfers or loans for the subsequent signing windows, although those limitations were removed in August.

Authority's Position

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the Owls followers, teams facing challenges where fans are dedicated to a regional establishment that has represented their community in multiple situations.

"I fully appreciate Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for each organization that in modern times have encountered failure, or approached financial ruin, for factors unrelated to the supporters."

Inquired if the oversight body could require an owner to sell a club if they are considered unfit, the chairman responded: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we gather the evidence and understand the situation, we will."

But the regulator clarified that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the authority would rather to work with them.

"The final option we would consider is commence engagement with an individual club, an individual owner, without having the opportunity to collaborate with that chairman to fix the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," the chairman stated.

"But the truth is, when you examine the past of football, over the past few decades there have been particular chairmen, a small minority, but some who have been irresponsible in the manner they have operated their teams and eventually decline to assume obligation for the coming years."

'Mistakes could erase significant advances'

The regulator engaged representatives from 110 clubs to explain the responsibilities of the regulator on Wednesday and stated it constituted a "proactive meeting" with a "high level of engagement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"The role holds considerable importance, because if we get it wrong, if the world of football gets it wrong, the extraordinary progress that's been made necessary will vanish swiftly," the chairman stated.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the terms of English football is a substantial accomplishment - we've got to keep it going.

"There's an enormous amount of money coming into football and has been channeled for the past two decades, because there's no guarantee it will keep flowing into the sport, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on challenges and obviously, of the next two or three years."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Top flight officials resisted the formation of an authority because of fears of a negative impact on the elite division's competitive balance, but the regulator stated: "I'm absolutely committed to the achievement and development as an commercial operation of the elite league.

"As someone who appreciates the concern of undermining the top flight as an elite competition of England. But simultaneously, if you talk to the Premier League after today's meeting, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a considerable comfort."

Political Connections

Kogan is still facing a "full inquiry" by the official appointments authority after he disclosed making donations to the opposition group in 2020.

The official donated money to government minister Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the now Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the parliamentary committee confirmed my selection," Kogan said.

"I am no longer involved in any form of political activity."
